I know the movie “In the Name of Love” is going to be a spectacular film. Yes, I’m raising my hopes to that level. I just can’t help but praise the elegance of In the Name of Love’s full theatrical trailer. Even though we are yet to watch In the Name of Love movie, there’s this feel that makes me crave for it.It’s going to be a big hit, if not Filipinos would have lack of taste in local movies.
I’ve been into watching asian romance films recently and I noticed the lack of maturity of the characters and the unpredictable pacing of the story. Yeah, those are good elements in a love story. But there’s really something about Filipino films that any other Asian films couldn’t afford to have.Like, Thai romance flicks are more into romantic comedy, good ones with great twists but it’s almost always a fairytale story with an open ending. Stories of Korean romantic movies are more focused on the genre presented, either there’s too much drama or cheerfulness. Japanese romance films, tackles more on the complexities of love, well most Asian movie does but their take is just uniquely delivered like in movies Cyborg She, Kimi Ni Todoke and Time Traveler: The Girl Who Leap Through Time. But only Filipino romance films notches up to something more sincere. Examples are movies like Milan, Kailangan Kita, A Love Story, And I Love You So, One More Chance and Got 2 Believe.
Some plots of Filipino romance films might be predictable and all. Nevertheless, it tackles love in a great pleasing way or even more. Most of our romcoms however sucks when it comes to storytelling. Since it was the trend last year, film outfits have started to pair-up big stars to rake in money in the box office.
This May, Star Cinema preps up something that might just become the greatest Filipino love story ever told.A movie by Olivia M. Lamasan, penned by the also awesome Enrico Santos. You may not have heard of Enrico, since most of you rarely watch the movie credits but he’s the guy behind great Filipino movies like Anak and Tanging Yaman as script/creative consultant and the guy who wrote the stories of Don’t Give Up on Us & Dreamboy.(Check his IMDB Profile)
Now, together with the Star Cinema crew, director Olivia Lamasan and stars Aga Muhlach, Angel Locsin and Jake Cuenca comes a must-see movie of the year “In the Name of Love”.
The theme song of the movie, “Love Story (Where Do I Begin)” performed by Gary V. takes you to a certain state of nostalgia that will make you remember of your first love. I suddenly remember my last dance at the Seniors Ball way back in High School – she was indeed my first love. lol.But really, I just fell in love with the song – great choice, prod team!
I wasn’t able to watch the live stream of the Press Conference of In the Name of Love but then, it’s said that they didn’t revealed much about the story and the characters.
A former dance instructor, Emman Toledo(Aga Muhlach) is assigned to choreograph for the Governor’s Ball. There he meets Cedes Fernandez (Angel Locsin) who is about to be engaged to Dylan Evelino (Jake Cuenca), the Governor’s son.
I think, That’s all we got for the story. . .

What she feels about the movie
– I really feel very very honored, na yung pelikulang ginawa ko ang naging anniversary offering ng star cinema. Why she found the script very intriguing or interesting – One thing that got me interested in Enrico’s script is unexpected ang kanyang story telling. Unexpected ang kanyang structure. It was a challenge for us to be able to tell a story and engage the audience na despite na unusual ang structure, engaging pa rin sa manonood. On what magic, questions and answers the movie has – Ang tinatanong ko kay Enrico nung ginagawa namin to, kasi the film poses a question e, how far will you go, for the person you love. How far will you go in the name of love? During the course of doing this movie, we tried to answer the question. And I realized na di ko siya masagot verbally. It’s something that happens, it’s something that’s not said.
What she thought of her cast – I’m so proud of them. We did this movie for more than a year. Grabe iyung pinagdaanan naming difficulties. But at the end, I’m so fulfilled and I’m so happy and proud of the performances, kung paano sila nag-evolve as actors. – Matatalino silang artista. Kailangan you’re on your toes kasi, nandito ka bilang director to guide them. You also have to be sensitive kung paano nila nakikita characters nila. I believe in collaboration. I really entertain that, in fact I encourage na magbigay sila ng insights sa characters nila.
On Angel Locsin – Si Angel talaga masipag na artista. She would read, ask questions and do research on her own. Sa huli, parang nabuhay na si Cedes. Nabuhay na. Parang siya na si Cedes. Her discussions with Aga on His role – Klinaro ko na kay Aga. Sabi ko Aga, I’d like to know kung willing ka. Kasi itong character this is his age. This is what happened to him — willing ka ba na aminin for the character na matanda na siya, eto nangyari sa kanya. May wrinkles na siya, he has aged, he has become a loser. Siyempre may imaging pa yung artista (being a leading man). Readily Aga said no. I don’t have any problems with that. (But since Lamasan sees that Aga is the perfect actor to play Emman, the actor agreed to play Emman). Her views of Jake Cuenca – Grabe! I’m so proud of Jake, you should see him. We would study the character together. She asks him about the character – ‘You tell me, I tell you’ we discuss it. We did a lot of research.
Why she thinks the movie is worth it – One thing that makes it worth it, iyung realization ng vision mo as director. Na na-achieve mo iyon. Na na-achieve niyo yon altogether. Very very lucky to work with brilliant men in this industry. Young ones, old ones, our writer Enrico Santos, his brilliant ideas. I’m also very lucky to work with a very young director of photography si German Claravall. Ang galing ng ilaw niya. Aga, Angel, Jake – they really gave their best. They were able to evolve as actors. Ay! Fulfillment na sa akin iyon.
Enrico Santos (Scriptwriter)
His perceptions about the three main characters – Papasukin muna natin ang mundo nila. We will find ourselves in either one of these characters.
The important lesson anyone can get from In the Name of Love – I guess ang biggest lesson would be, para sa nagmamahal, dapat ikaw ay matapang. And that’s not only the one you love, or husband or wife, pati pamilya mo. It covers everything, for love you need a lot of courage and bravery.
Aga Muhlach The bonding he has with the director that lead to them working on the film – With Inang (Olive Lamasan), parati naming pinag-uusapan iyan. We’d always talk about it, every time we’d see each other. So parang when this movie was offered sa akin, with Olive there, and the story sabi ko perfect talaga! – because of the bigness ng pelikulang ito. Why he sees In the Name of Love has such great magnitude and is a big movie – It’s an Olivia Lamasan film. Me, Angel, Jake, so there’s no reason na di niyo panoorin ito. 18th Anniversary ng Star Cinema. One year in the making, emotionally draining, physically draining. He feels fortunate of the movie he made under Star Cinema – I’ve done movies for Star Cinema na Anniversary nila. It makes you feel special also, sa Star Cinema, pag nag-a-anniversary sila at pelikula mo iyung napipili para iyun ang ilabas sa publiko, it makes you special also. May 11, In the Name of Love. sa lahat ng sinehan sa buong pilipinas.
Angel Locsin Why the movie has humbled her so much – Honestly after doing this movie talaga pakiramdam ko nasa umpisa pa lang din ako. Dito nag-grow ako as an actress talaga. Kaya I’m very happy and proud na nakasama ako dito sa In the Name of Love. Abangan po natin ito. May 11.
Expressing how overwhelmed he is over In the Name of Love – Nung unang in-offer sa kin ang pelikulang ito, di ko inexpect eh. When they called me, I already knew it was an Aga-Angel movie. That’s when I knew na this is going to be a challenge. This is something that’s gonna change my life. Then it was. I really felt so lucky to be in it. Because it’s Aga Muhlach, It’s Angel Locsin , and it was Direk Olivia Lamasan. And there it was, I knew in the beginning it wasn’t gonna be easy. I knew from the beginning this was gonna change me. Inspired by Olive Lamasan’s directing – Direk Olive gets your trust from the beginning. You hear her talk. Maririnig mo siya magsalita, alam mong hindi mo na kailangan makita yung yung credentials niya, just the way she talks, the way she explains something to you. And the only way, dapat ibigay mo rin ng buong puso sa sarili mo. Expressing how fortunate he is to be in the cast – I have probably done something right to be a part of this movie. And I pray and thank God for this opportunity, to represent the 18 years, 18 successful years of Star Cinema. And the blessing, to be in this movie to represent that 18 years. Mga kapamilya, May 11 na po, In the Name of Love.
