Today, horror is mostly defined by torture and gorno (a portmanteu of gore and p0rn) and the other subgenres including horror’s pioneer subgenre, gothic/atmospheric horror have diminished in the past few years. This year horror fans are lucky to have quite a handful of it at least.  Now allow me to list down 10 gothic, atmospheric or what we sometimes refer to as traditional horror movies of 2012!

Take note that the movies aren’t ranked in any particular order. So here it goes!

.) Sinister – From the producer of Insidious and Paranormal Activity comes yet another horror fare that will terrorize our mind with its spine-chilling atmosphere “Sinister” and introduce us to a new horror icon called “Bagul”. Set in a house where a family was murdered. A crime novelist moves his family in and discovers home videos in the attic that gave clues about the murder but has put them all in danger – most especially his two children. From the director who brought us “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” and “The Day The Earth Stood Still”, comes another a supernatural movie that will bring BAGUL not just into our photographs but into our photographic memories. I believe the concept of Bagul living in the images is inspired by a scene in “Insidious” where they revealed to Joss about his

.) The Possession – This film has just been released recently. Although I haven’t seen this movie yet, The Possession got quite a good share of nice reviews. Most reviews, however, states that the film suffers from a sluggish pacing. But then the scares in it are very effective. A film based on a true story!

.) The Tall Man – If there’s any movie I’m eager to watch right now (yep, the moment I’m writing this) it’s got to be The Tall Man. Inspired by an old urban legend about tall “strangers” who kidnap kids, this take on the current internet horror hit “Slender Man” is said to be a really good account if not great. With Jessica Biel on the lead role I’m sure it’s gone even better. While quite underrated, most reviews claim that this thriller presents a story that is considered as a treat for cinema lovers. Not entirely horror though.

.)  The Intruders  – This Clive Owen starrer takes the risks as it is about two children who are thousand miles apart haunted by a faceless man. This one, I must say, is the closest to Slenderman.

.) The Woman in Black – Shown last April, The Woman in Black is but one of the best horror movies in the new millennium. It’s well executed, has a solid story, effective jump scares and decent acting from the Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe. It’s a personal favorite!

.) The Innkeepers – During the final days at the Yankee Pedlar Inn, two employees determined to reveal the hotel’s haunted past begin to experience disturbing events as old guests check in for a stay. A worthy film for fans of old fashion ghost movies. The movie sets a creepy atmosphere all throughout the movie.

.) Lovely Molly – Newlywed Molly moves into her deceased father’s house in the countryside, where painful memories soon begin to haunt her. Lovely Molly is said to be a cross between the style of Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity with a different and more haunting story.

.) The Awakening – In 1921, England is overwhelmed by the loss and grief of World War I. Hoax exposer Florence Cathcart visits a boarding school to explain sightings of a child ghost. Everything she believes unravels as the ‘missing’ begin to show themselves.

.) V/H/S: 10/31/98 – This short from the upcoming found-footage horror film anthology pays tribute to the haunted house genre and imports some asian horror scares. One of the creepiest and best horror film in recent memory! 🙂

.) Paranormal Activity 4 – I feel like Hollywood is actually obsessing on the found-footage genre. But even that, Paranormal Activity seems to get better and better each year. I personally love Paranormal Activity 3 as it really presented a decent story! I could say that the 2nd was the weakest in terms of story and the first Paranormal Activity would have been great if not for being too looong and repetitive. Paranormal Activity 4 focuses on Alice and her mom, experiencing weird stuff since the new neighbors (Katie and Robbie) moved in the town. it wasn’t just in the Strider family, because like everyone else, they had neighbors too!
