As early as now I could point out which 2012 MMFF entries are gonna take home tons of moolah in the box office this coming Metro Manila Film Festival. I’m not quite certain if this prediction is necessary though but I just want to say it anyway.

As usual the box office race is on between Ai Ai delas Alas and Vic Sotto’s respective MMFF entries. But there seems to be a game changer in this years’ list. That is Star Cinema’s romance drama film entitled “One More Try” which stars Angel Locsin, Dingdong Dantes, Zanjoe Marudo and Angelica Panganiban. With a powerhouse cast of today’s brightest stars, One More Try can possibly outrun “Sisteraka” and “Si Agimat, Si Enteng at Ako” in the box office race. Take note that Angel Locsin’s UnOfficially Yours movie was a box office hit with P157.25 million of ticket sales! You can sum up Angelica Panganiban’s Every Breath U Take movie which grossed only P50-m but did great during its opening day. Dingdong Dantes’ upcoming horror adventure movie “Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles” is also expected to become a box office hit considering it’s the first Filipino movie to be shot in green screen and people are literally counting down for its release, myself included. Zanjoe hasn’t done any movie this year though except for One More Try but with the theme alone they’re really gonna do big time with this film. Ever since last year it seemed like Film outfits have discovered that there’s a huge market for mature films in the industry. Believe me there is!

If you’re not moved that there’s really a market for mature films you can check box office hits No Other Woman, The Mistress and A Secret Affair which I think will do big time in the box office. But if you still won’t then don’t! I guess I’ll have to persuade you by saying this “I know the market because I am the market!“.

While Ai ai delas Alas is teaming up with the phenomenal box office star Vice Ganda for Sisteraka. Vic Sotto on the other hand is back to back to back with Bong Revilla and Judy Ann Santos in the fantasy comedy movie “Si Agimat, Si Enteng at Ako“.That means, these two are still tough contenders. But the films I’ve mentioned are likely to complete the top 3 Highest grossers.

Meanwhile, since Star Cinema didn’t collaborate with other production company for a Kris Aquino or any horror film this year we have the indie film solely produced by Quantum Films entitled “The Strangers” which is currently being eyed on by nearly everyone for it boasts of a powerhouse cast from the brightest young stars to the veterans. It might be an art film considering it’s indie and most indie stray away from film formulas. Another contender in the box office I guess. But here’s the thing. Chito S. Rono will be directing the little tiresome horror anthology film “Shake Rattle and Roll 14”  and with his film “The Healing” which box office gross had reached the P100-million mark. We have these two completing the Top 5 I guess. But TV5 won’t allow that with their film “Ang Mga Kwento ni Lola Basyang” which is a trilogy that is likely to become a film franchise and for the second time since a long time ago we will have another Lola Basyang to tell us three different stories. If they bill the right actors on this project I believe they’ll get close with what SRR 14 is gonna get.

Probably in the bottom two on the box office chart is Mark Meilly’s El Presidente and GMA Films’ Sosy Problems. You know the problem with Historical Drama films is that they seem too serious for the Christmas season.  Although it is topbilled by the Superstar Nora Aunor, Cesar Montano and Cristine Reyes I doubt it will do big time in the box office. The good thing though is that these underrated and not-so box office hit makers usually gets to take home the major awards. Although it was only until last year where I could say a film really deserved the best picture award regardless of issues hounding Manila Kingpin.

As for Sosy Problems, maybe it’s way too sosy and first world for the people to relate to and it reminds us of another Desperadas film.
