Batangas Governor and Star for All Seasons Ms. Vilma Santos is playing the role of a ‘movie extra‘ or ‘bit player‘ in a mock-up and actual film entitled “Ekstra, The Bit Player” for 2013 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. Enpress Golden Screen TV Awards best actress Marian Rivera is also set to appear in the movie as Belinda, the leading lady and yaya of Loida Malabanan (Vilma Santos) in the mock-up soap opera ‘Nauna Ka Naging Akin, Book 2‘.

According to reports, Marian’s guesting in Ekstra was completely for free just like in the indie film Zombadings. In an interview with People’s Journey, Marian Rivera said “Ako naman, ginawa ko ito dahil gusto kong makasama si Gov. Vi and also for Atty. Joji, […] I really had a good time shooting for the movie kahit guest role lang ako. Nag-enjoy ako kasi ang gaan ng atmosphere sa set. Parang ‘di nagtatrabaho ang mga tao at ang saya ng lahat. Nakakahawa kasi si Gov. Vi. Low key lang and super professional, sa kabila ng stature niya. She just follows lahat ng direction ni Direk Jeffrey Jeturian.”

Ekstra is a socio-realist drama-comedy about a woman who works as “extra” or bit player in indie films. A tribute to the small people in the industry (extras).

Jeffrey Jeturian’s Cinemalaya 2013 entry ‘Ekstra’ (The Bit Player) is a confirmation that mainstream stars are crossing over the independent cinema after last year’s highly successful Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival which was graced by big-time mainstream stars. This time around, more and more of the hottest mainstream stars will be seen in the said festival. So far we have Gretchen Barretto (The Diplomat Hotel), Jake Cuenca (Nuwebe), Paulo Avelino (Debosyon) and Vilma Santos (Ekstra).

In Ekstra alone are stars Piolo Pascual, Marian Rivera, Cherie Gil, Pilar Pilapil, Richard “Sir Chief” Yap,  Eula Valdes and even the acclaimed director Jose Javier Reyes to play supporting roles or have cameo appearances.

With its star-studded cast and Quantum Films’ relationship with Star Cinema. We should expect it to hit theaters a few weeks after Cinemalaya 2013 festival.
